DOT Exams FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about the Department of Transportation (DOT) Exam

Driving a commercial vehicle is a major responsibility, and DOT exams are required to ensure you’re up to the task. It's important to note that DOT exam requirements and regulations may change over time, so it's advisable to consult the current guidelines and work with a certified medical examiner for the most accurate and up-to-date information. Below, our team at Premier Wellness Chiropractic in Pasadena, CA, answers some of the most common questions about DOT physicals.

.

Can Our Chiropractor Perform a DOT Exam?

Chiropractors can perform a DOT physical. However, you must be sure that the chiropractor you visit is on the National Registry as a Certified Medical Examiner (FMCSA). You might also see them listed as a CME or just a medical examiner, all of which mean the same thing.

What Does Our DOT Exam Include?

A DOT exam is an in-depth physical exam. You’ll start answering questions about your medical history, family history, and symptoms. The examiner will check your blood pressure, heart rate, hearing, reflexes, breathing, and more. The exam determines if anything interferes with your ability to operate a vehicle safely.

How Long Does Our DOT Exam Take?

You can expect 30 to 45 minutes, as it is an extensive physical exam. If additional testing is required, it might take longer.

Is it Possible to Fail a DOT Exam?

Anything that can potentially prevent you from operating a vehicle can cause you to fail. This can include diabetes, high blood pressure, alcohol abuse, hearing trouble, vision problems, and heart disease. These things don’t automatically fail you. It depends on the severity, whether you’re receiving treatment, and how well we can manage your issues.

For example, as long as you can see well with corrective lenses, vision problems aren’t an issue.

Can I Retake the Exam?

Generally, yes, you can retake your exam. However, you’ll need to address the issue that caused you to fail. High blood pressure is a common cause of failure. You can retake the test if you receive treatment or lower your blood pressure through other techniques.
