DOT EXAMS

A department of transportation (DOT) physical exam ensures a person is physically fit to operate a commercial vehicle without putting themselves or others in danger. Typically, the exam is administered before a person is issued their CDL or starts working as a truck driver. In addition to the physical exam, which a chiropractor can administer, an eye exam will determine the driver’s vision quality. Vision must be 20/40 correctable in each eye (or combined), with or without corrective lenses. The chiropractors at Premier Wellness Chiropractic in Pasadena, CA, can help you with your DOT exam and other health and wellness needs.

What is a DOT Physical?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration mandates the DOT physical examination and applies to commercial motor vehicle drivers. The physical ensures the driver is in good physical, mental, and emotional health to operate a commercial vehicle. The physical is also for employees working on commercial vehicles, which requires them to have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) and pass the DOT physical.

Getting a DOT Exam in Pasadena, CA

During the DOT exam, our chiropractor will check your vital signs, review your medical history, and conduct a hands-on physical exam. The physical exam may include an examination of your general appearance, eye, ears, mouth, throat, heart, lungs, chest, extremities, hernias, back, spine, and nervous system.

An eye and hearing test is required, and your blood pressure must be below 140/90. Once you have passed, the medical examiner will issue a medical examiner’s certificate, also known as a DOT medical card. This card proves you met all DOT physical requirements, and without a valid DOT medical card, you risk losing your CDL.

What to Bring to Your DOT Physical

You must bring some things to the appointment to ensure you complete the paperwork needed for your DOT physical exam. For example, you need to have your driver’s license, a list of medications, eyeglasses or contacts, hearing aids, the most recent results of a lab test, and blood sugar tracking for the past 90 days.

Other health-related documentation may also be required depending on your underlying health conditions. To save time, complete the driver’s section on page one of the exam forms before arriving for your DOT exam. In addition, a list of everything you need should be supplied when you make your appointment.
